HAWMC: Five Dinner Guests

by Em on April 19, 2012

For the month of April, I’m participating in the Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge from Wego Health. I will be writing a health-related post per day, based on the HAWMC prompts. Thanks so much for reading!

Today’s challenge is to talk about our dream dinner party; to pick five guests and explain why you chose them.

Gary Taubes:

I loved Good Calories, Bad Calories and I think Taubes is a such a smart guy. However, I definitely have some criticisms .. and some questions too. For example, I want to know Taubes reconciles the significant proportion of healthy people who eat diets high in grains with his quite extremist point of view.

Also (as a health advisor who definitely sometimes sways towards the ‘Do as I say, not as I do’) what I really want to know is… does he seriously never eat dessert?

Sally Fallon:

Sally is the author of Nourishing Traditions, possibly my favourite cookbook and nutrition resource. Sally is also an unusually reasonable woman … I love how in her book she says she would never expect mother’s to give up pasta as a standby!

My big questions however, would still centre around more concrete evidence for the theories she puts forward. For example, saying unsoaked grains can deplete mineral reserves. Is there really less osteoporosis in people who soak their grains? Have any wider population studies been carried out?

Also, are there any modern practices in agriculture that she thinks have improved nutrition?

Russell Simmons:

The vegan hip hop producer and philantrophist, who I also have a super unexpected mini crush on. (Have you seen his house on cribs?!)

I want to see him and Gary fight it out!

Monica Reigngel:

The worlds most rational nutritionist. I would like her to adjudicate Russell and Gary.

Also, Monica went to culinary school so can help provide a bit of foodie balance within the chaos.

Possibly the only person I can count on for a reliable response to ‘Do you want to share the meyer lemon cheesecake?’

Jennifer Aniston:

For various uncool, shallow and totally un-intellecutal reasons like: I’m still obsessed with Friends, I want to know what happened with Brad … and I really need her to tell me how she gets her body (my favourite in showbiz!)

I told you, I’m an awful shallow person.

How about you?

Hi Em! It was so great meeting you for lunch today. I love how easily we clicked and how much we had in common. Can’t wait to get together again.

I don’t really have anyone in particular that I would want to have dinner with that is famous or semi-famous. I really just love small and intimate dinners with good friends and good conversation. I love dinners where you linger over the food for hours just talking and getting caught up in the moment, where there is lots of laugher and spiritual insight! That is a perfect dinner party for me.

Oh Jackie! You know when I was saying sometimes I write an entire post and then delete it all and thats why it takes me so long..? WELL, I actually had a whole post written about dinner with my 5 best friends, with a little quote of wisdom from all of them about health that has stuck with me (Hi Alice, Anna, Ang Chloe – you were all on the list). Anyhow, then I got self conscious about how I am always going on about my friends on my blog and how boring it must be for everyone, so I changed it. But now I wish I hadn’t. I should have gone with my intuition right..?! I can’t wait too!! xox

I’d want Anthony Bourdain… and he hates vegetarians, let alone vegans, but man I love that dude :)

Ha!! I feel like Russell might hate me, as might Jen when I interrogate her about her breakup and force feed her cheesecake!

I’m afraid that all my five would be for shallow totally un-intellectual reasons!

Jenny! Mine might be as well if you caught me at a different time of day… or directly post reading ‘People’ *my very occasional guilty pleasure :)

I would invite Sally Fallon too, but I’d be kinda terrified to cook for her … And I’d invite YOU!
