[...] As I’ve said before, I don’t think there is one key to health, and I basically believe whatever diet gives you the most energy is going to be the best for you. However, not only are vegetables super energising – and essential for your immune system! – they also offer protection against many of the toxins we are exposed to day in and day out. I definitely believe that eating a plant based diet is essential for most anyone living in a modern western country. In any case, I would much rather sit back and hope for great health with a large salad and the occasional cheeseburger than go round in circles with plates full of steak, brown rice or protein shake.
When I was a teenager, I thought a blueberry chocolate muffin was healthy -beacuse it had fruit in it, and muffins were "healthy" weren't they? Ha.

I think humans over-feed. We don't eat only for fuel, we eat for pleasure too (hence we tend to over indulge - we eat more than we NEED). Other animals have to hunt to find enough to stay alive - humans have worked out how to farm food, and so we have a plethora available.

Anyway, I think a general kinda nutrition rule is to eat a mainly plant based diet - a little meat is fine if you enjoy it+ it makes you feel good. Basically eat REAL food (or as close to the original source as possible).

Eat until you are satisfied, but not ridiculously full (oh how I try to do this and FAIL).

I really think that diet is so individual though - every BODY is so different, so of course having a general "rule" isn't going to suit every body... trial and error - figure out what suits you and your body + what makes you energised and happy.

I feel best when I don't meat - it makes me feel heavy and sluggish. Lots of fish, tofu, legumes, veges, fruit, nuts, seeds = happy vibrant Lou. Gentle daily exercise (yoga and walking) and a bit of meditation now and then, and I'm rocking- that's what I've figured out so far.

Oh and alcoholic beverages for medicinal purposes and good mental health :) xxx

First of all, that picture of you is so stinking cute!!!

I think there are some universal rules--all of which you mention in your post: Fruits and veggies = good. Grass-fed, local, free-range meat/poultry = good. Lots of water = good. Not smoking = good. I am also really concerned with cutting out soy products because they mess with hormone levels. However, I think the rest really depends on the individual. Paleo eating works SO well for me, but for others it may not be a good fit!

Hi Emmy, Thanks for stopping by my website. I so agree with you. During my college years, I was carefree and now I'm getting older, I tend to be more cautious and have a healthier lifestyle. Haha! Congrats on starting your own blog :)

I totally agree with you on that college thing! I really wasn't healthy in college at all--I just ate what tasted good after drinking beer all night and while frantically studying. :) Now I have a much better idea---I have to give some of the credit to food blogs!
